Transatlantik continues its two-day immersion into the syncretic thought and spirit forms of the Black Atlantic. Featuring performers finding expression through the ancient and modern modalities of Haiti, Brazil and New York City, night two welcomes Port-au-Prince via Brooklyn kanaval band ReFash NYNY Band, rhythm and song connection Anaïs Maviel & Friends, and roots-to-the-future collagist DJ Tara.

As much as Transatlantik II will be a celebration, it is also happening in the midst of a major crisis facing NYC’s Caribbean community at this moment. 100% of ticket proceeds from both nights will be donated to Haitian Women for Haitian Refugees, a Brooklyn-based organization offering free legal clinics, preparedness workshops and other support to those affected by the Trump administration’s termination of TPS (Temporary Protection Status) for Haiti. Thousands of Haitian New Yorkers (and 350,000 Haitians nationwide) have been impacted by the loss of legal status and cancellation of pending applications, and now face returning to a country wracked by political instability, gang and gender-based violence.

ReFash NYNY Band is a joyous, high energy bann a pye (“walking band” in Haitian kreyol) that counts many of the finest drummers and brass players of New York City’s Haitian community among its ranks. Originally founded in Port-Au-Prince in the 1980s under the name Fashion Mattè, the group quickly gained a reputation playing parties, gatherings and the parades and revelry of kanaval, Haiti’s version of the pre-Lent festivities leading up to Mardi Gras. Port-au-Prince has one of the most exuberant carnival celebrations in the Caribbean and North America—and even there, Fashion Mattè stood out for their ability to synthesize elements of rara, vodou and popular music into an ecstatic street band style all their own.

Over time, members of the group began migrating to NYC and reformed under a new name, ReFash NYNY Band. Jean Wesly “Dadou” Cantave, who joined the original Fashion Mattè band in the early 1990s, now directs the band and describes ReFash’s irrepressible grooves, wailing trombones, trumpets and body moving sousaphones as simply a roots band who “play all of the rhythms of Haiti.”

Vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and composer Anaïs Maviel belongs to the deep tradition of the song and the drum. Whether accompanying herself on the surdo, keyboards or kamele n’goni (a West African harp), hers is a language of melody and rhythm. She has described her own singing as being informed by the sound of drums, and sings in many languages, including one that practitioners of Shona mbira or Haitian vodou music (both traditions of great interest to Maviel) might understand as being used to “call spirits.” Always in contact with this elemental source, Maviel has composed vocal ensemble pieces, evening length rituals, and new music works. With “& Friends” Maviel gathers her extended musical family around the deep pleasure  of song and rhythm. Longtime collaborators and special guests from New York City and Sao Pãolo’s fertile creative music communities—Judette Elliston (vox, synth), Bonita Oliver (vox, effects), Xavier Del Castillo (bass clarinet, vox), Alec Goldfarb (guitar, vox), and a very special guest—will join Maviel (vox, kamele n'goni, keys, electronics) to move from intimate duo settings to joyous ensemble numbers that will get the dance floor moving.

DJ Tara will spin soulful selections that cross eras, genres, and continents before, after and between the live sets.

This second edition of Transatlantik is part of an ongoing series of performances, discussions, and other public convenings exploring creolization as a living process—from Martinican authors Patrick Chamoiseau and Édouard Glissant’s reformulation of negritude into the polyvalent identities of créolité, to the myriad expressions of contemporary Afro-diasporic communities from around the world.
